We are sorry to announce the passing of Mort Shapiro. We offer our condolences to his beloved wife, Joyce, children, Jeffrey, Richard, David and his siblings, Barbara and Bernard and their entire family. The funeral will be at Agudath Sholom this Friday at 11:00 AM.
This past Saturday night, I merited to have a final conversation with Mort Shapiro, who passed away early this morning. In sharing with me stories about his life, he reminisced that years ago he received an award at Agudath Sholom when Saul Kwartin, of blessed memory was president. Mort was the recipient of a Mensch award. I did not know this vignette from our past but could not think of a better person to give and receive the award. Mort and Saul were pillars of our community whose character and mensclechkeit inspired and touched our shul and community.
G-d works in my mysterious ways. Tomorrow, we had planned a Mensch Seminar with Rabbi Hanoch Teller but due to the impending storm we are rescheduling for March 2nd. However, a mensch is best embodied in the life of a person such as Mort. Please consider paying tribute to Mort at his funeral this Friday,January 14th at 11 AM at Agudath Sholom followed by burial at the Agudath Sholom cemetery. Shiva information will be forthcoming.
May Joyce and her entire family be comforted among the mourners of Zion and Jerusalem and may his memory inspire the spirit of menschlechkeit in our community.
